The cloud of an assault charge hanging over his head was not enough to deter the Sydney Roosters from re-signing teenage hooker Jake Friend.
The Roosters continued to shore up their young talent yesterday by securing Friend through to the end of the 2012 season.
It was a show of faith by Roosters management, with Friend and teammate Sandor Earl facing assault charges stemming from a nightclub brawl in June.
That incident came days after Friend was convicted of a drink-driving charge, for which he was fined $850 and banned from driving for 18 months, and stood down for two matches by the Roosters.
Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce said, ''We see Jake as a good kid. He's made a mistake and we've all made mistakes but he's knuckled down and we see him as a important part of the club leading forward.''
Friend's re-signing continues a strategic push by the Roosters to lock up their junior stars, with Mitchell Pearce, Tom Symonds, Ben Jones and Anthony Cherrington agreeing to contract extensions in recent weeks after meeting during the club's bye round.
Friend said the re-signing of the players with whom he progressed through grades was a factor in his staying with the Bondi-based club.
''I am looking forward to spending the next few years here at the Roosters and working with the young guys we have,'' Friend said.
Friend and Earl pleaded not guilty to their assault charges last month and are due to reappear at Downing Centre Local Court at a yet-to-be-determined date. AAP
