STEVE MENZIES' premiership farewell was not goodbye, it was only au revoir . After he left Manly as a title winner following the 40-0 thrashing of Melbourne, Menzies is set to be invited back to the club following his stint in the British Super League with Bradford to work on the club's staff - with chief executive Grant Mayer saying he would be "crazy" not to hire him.
"It hasn't been discussed, but I can guarantee the club will make the first phone call when he arrives back in Australia," Mayer said. "There's got to be a role for Steve, whether it be mentoring role, coaching role or administration. We'd be crazy to cast him off."
Menzies' departure from the club took a twist after Sunday's decider, in which he scored a try, when he revealed he might play in the World Club Challenge against Leeds next year, meaning he might not have played his last game for the club. But when he has, it's clear the club has not seen the last of him.
Menzies has a one-year deal with the Bulls, with an option for the second year, and while Mayer said he did not expect the veteran back-rower to take up a coaching role with the Sea Eagles any time soon, he vowed to find a job for the 34-year-old somewhere.
"There were 80,000 people [at the grand final], and 70,000 were going for Manly, through guys like Beaver," Mayer said. "His focus is on his business, the financial services, but that said, if there are opportunities after hours, before hours - he's just got to be there in some capacity. To have the guy in to mentor the young kids would be really important. The guy is an absolute role model and legend."
Of a possible one-off appearance against Leeds, who beat St Helens 24-16 in Saturday night's Super League grand final, Mayer said: "At the end of the day, he's contracted to Manly until the 31st of October, after that he's a Bradford player. That would be about round three for Bradford, so it's a pretty big consideration.
"I just can't see how the club or the player would allow that to happen. It's a nice romantic dream but I can't see it happening."
