Tigers call on young cub to revive hope

15 Jul, 2009 01:00 AM
Wests Tigers will hand an NRL debut to 20-year-old second-rower Simon Dwyer against North Queensland at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday.

The 192cm-tall Dwyer is called up from the club's Toyota Cup side and takes his place on the interchange bench in a game the Tigers have to win to keep alive their hopes of reaching the finals.

''He is a big, strong backrower, who plays on the right edge and hits a good line, has a good offload and we think he has a big future,'' Tigers assistant coach Royce Simmons said.

The Tigers will meet an in-form Cowboys side sitting fifth on the ladder, boosted by the return of Johnathan Thurston after State of Origin duty tonight.

However the visitors will be without NSW second-rower Luke O'Donnell (knee) and hooker Aaron Payne (shoulder) who are both sidelined through injury.

Meanwhile Brisbane coach Ivan Henjak has named 20-year-old Alex Glenn in his side to face South Sydney at Suncorp Stadium on Friday.

Glenn will fill in for injured Queensland and Australia winger Israel Folau who is sidelined with a broken ankle.

Ben Te'o returns to the Broncos bench after a two-week suspension for a dangerous tackle.

The Titans welcome back Preston Campbell for their trip to Brisbane to face the Bulldogs, who are officially the home side after moving the fixture from ANZ Stadium.
