Poll slip: a blip or a warning?

Are voters sending the same message to the Rudd Government?

There has been a dramatic change in the latest Newspoll. Voter support for the Government has slumped seven points to 52 per cent on a two-party-preferred basis. The Opposition is on 48 per cent up seven points. The major parties had similar levels of support at the federal election almost two years ago.

A range of theories has been put forward to explain the surprise result. Some argue the outcome is an aberration. Some contend this marks the start of a new trend. Others think it is too early to tell either way. But the fresh debate over border protection policies is usually cited as a factor.
