Is Africa a continent? Palin's true ignorance now revealed

07 Nov, 2008 09:44 AM
Suddenly propelled to the national stage, Sarah Palin had the dubious honour of being the least experienced vice-presidential candidate in the history of the US. Now, with the presidential election decided, the Sydney Morning Herald looks to her political future.

Weeks after Sarah Palin was lampooned by the country's comedians, her own party is catching up.

John McCain's aides have revealed their vice-presidential candidate did not know Africa was a continent and in fact thought it was a country.

She also had no idea which countries made up the North American Free Trade Agreement [NAFTA], or that the United States - along with Canada and Mexico - was one of them.

Fox News anchor Carl Cameron, the source of the leaks, reveals the party's one-time darling was already shaping up as its whipping boy before the defeat to the Democrats sank in.

"There was great concern in the McCain campaign that Sarah Palin lacked the degree of knowledgeability necessary to be a running mate, a vice-president, and a heartbeat away from the presidency," he said.

"We're told she didn't understand that Africa was a continent rather than a country just in itself - a whole host of questions that caused serious problems.

"I wish I could have told you more at the time but all of it was put off the record until after the election."

The Alaskan governor's big spend on clothes emerged publicly last month, but McCain's aides also said that she spent "thousands more" than the reported $US150,000 on clothes during the campaign, much to the shock of the donor that footed the bill, the Daily Mail reports.

An angry aide, quoted in London's Times, described the shopping spree as "Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast", and predicted that the truth would eventually come out when the Republican Party audits its books.

She had been advised she should buy three new suits for the Republican National Convention in September and three additional suits for the campaign, expected to come to a total of between $US20,000 and $US25,000, two top aides said.

Cameron also revealed the Alaskan governor started to "go rogue" early on, such as after her first disastrous CBS interview with Katie Couric.

"She got very angry at staff, thought that she was mishandled, was particularly angry about the way the Katie Couric interview went," he said.

The moment was then satirised by Tina Fey on Saturday Night Live in a video clip watched by millions.

"She didn't accept preparation for that interview and the aides say that that was part of the problem. And there were times that she was hard to control emotionally - there's talk of temper tantrums at bad news clippings," he said.

Cameron cites a "truncated" vetting process for Palin's selection after McCain's camp decided the then-shortlist was inadequate to "change the game" in the race for the presidency.

So they opted instead for a candidate who reportedly once opened the door to one of McCain's aides in a towel.

The relationship between McCain and Palin was further strained after she was recorded falling for a prank call by two Canadian comedians pretending to be French president Nicolas Sarkozy.

"Her staff didn't know the name of the French President," Sebastien Trudel told The Globe and Mail. "They asked us to spell it."

McCain and Palin both left Phoenix in separate cars yesterday, but Palin, for her part, "bears no ill-will to staff", Cameron said.

Palin has not ruled out a 2012 tilt, but Tina Fey has told Entertainment Weekly that she's hanging up her Palin wig.

McCain chose a running partner who was clearly out of her depth. It was a calculated choice and it did not pay off. In many ways Palin exemplified our worst fears of what the US had become - ignorant and isolated and unaware. But I think it is harsh to blame Palin for her failings - McCain and his advisors should carry the can for such a poor choice. I am grateful that so many Americans saw the Republican team for what it was and chose Obama and Biden who at least have the intellect for the vast work needing to be done to repair the misdeeds of the Bush era.

The scariest thing about Sarah Palin running for VP is the fact that someone like her actually got to that level. Money, beauty, hockey, killin' animals, plumbing, family wealth and connections, what? It certainly wasn't anything to do with intelligence, education or knowledge of global issues, geography or history! The cynic in me suspects she was a Democrat plant :o) Perhaps she is about to embark on 4 years of education somewhere in the EU or even DownUnder? We can only hope this will also open her eyes, and broaden her mind and heart too, but alas I think that may be too much to expect. I cannot entertain the thought of her or anyone like her (male or female) ever running for this level of office again. Truly frightening. Obama for 2012!

Sarah Palin will be a woman to watch in future elections. I am surprised we did not hear as much about Mr. Biden. I don't believe that to be fair to sarah Palin. How much does Biden know about anything? With respect to Obama he has 150 something days of experience behind him and no one seems to be concerned by that thought. Both vice presidential canadates have not enough experience to run for such a high office. I will stand behind our president for as Americans we should stand united. Thank you for the privilege to post.

Before Palin McCain drew crowds of 1000. After Palin 30-40, Palin drew 60-100,000. Just like Bush, McCain can not be counted on to support the persons who supported him. He lost the conservative vote and the election. Heck Africa could have been the 60th state since Obama said we already have 59. This kind of dark reporting of gaffs and jokes as facts was also practiced by CNN. The issue is not what Palin allegedly said but how she wasn't supported by McCain's team. Just like Bush not supporting our soldiers, border agents, or the attorney general who only did his bidding. McCain deserved to lose. Palin did not.

She has three kids in school, and doesn't have a map of the world hanging in her house anywhere? Worse than that, she was never curious, not even a little, given recent events, where Sudan is, or Somalia? And the money blown on clothing: Figuring four of her kids with her (one an infant, of course--needing very little, I'd think, after the baby showers), her husband, and herself, works out to $25,000 per person, including the baby. Now let's leave out the baby. It goes up to a mind-blowing $30,000 per person. For clothes. You can get a fine pair of shoes in this country for $100. Say two pairs per person (although I don't know why each would need TWO pairs for a couple of public appearances--it's not as if they'd need court shoes, cross-trainers, kicks, Bean boots, peeptoes--do I need to go on?) That leaves $29,800, per person--for clothes. Such a foolish woman.

And Obama thinks there are 57 states and Biden thinks that Roosevelt was President during the 1929 stock market crash and TV existed. Are they equally ignorant, stupid and under-educated (Republicans), or did they just "mis-speak" (Democrats)?

This one's a dead dog, and we need to stop whipping it. McCain was not only out of touch with the American people, he picked a certifiable bimbo for his running mate. We (the U.S.) still have more aircraft carriers, nuclear submarines, fighter planes, and more poor people, more people with ZERO health care, more 16-year-olds who can't point to their own state on a map of the U.S. and more religious fundamentalist halfwits than any country on the planet. Dammit.
