A narrow majority favoured the US-led war in Afghanistan, but the public is pessimistic about the chances of success against the Taliban.
The link with the US has been a cornerstone of Australia's defence policy since the ANZUS treaty was signed in 1951.
This has been reaffirmed by successive Coalition and Labor governments, and broadly supported by the public.
