Obama factor lifts support for US alliance

The election of Barack Obama has sparked a surge in support for Australia's defence ties with the United States.

The Australian National University poll found support now equals the peak recorded immediately after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

A narrow majority favoured the US-led war in Afghanistan, but the public is pessimistic about the chances of success against the Taliban.

The link with the US has been a cornerstone of Australia's defence policy since the ANZUS treaty was signed in 1951.

This has been reaffirmed by successive Coalition and Labor governments, and broadly supported by the public.
