Soldiers shot dead

05 Apr, 2009 01:03 AM

FOUR Thai soldiers were killed and 10 were captured during clashes between Thai and Cambodian soldiers along a disputed border, a Cambodian spokesman said.

Thailand's foreign ministry said only one Thai soldier died.

The battles occurred several hours apart on Friday in an escalation of tensions in a feud over an 11th-century temple.

"The fighting has stopped. Commanders from both sides are talking," said Major Nou Sarath, a Cambodian soldier at the border.

The Preah Vihear temple, on the Cambodian side of an ill-defined border, has been a source of conflict for decades.
