Police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found lying in a gutter in Sydney's south after an apparent traffic accident.

Emergency services were called to Burns Lane in Caringbah just after 5am on Friday to reports that the man was unconscious and bleeding heavily.

Paramedics arrived a short time later but the man, thought to have been aged in his mid-30s, had already died.

Initial investigations suggest he may have been involved in a traffic accident, a NSW Police spokeswoman said.

A vehicle had stopped at the scene, and the driver would be questioned by police.

Officers from the Miranda local area command have set up a crime scene and are trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the man's death.

President Avenue has been closed west-bound at Kingsway while the investigation continues.

Police have urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page.
