Ex-officer's trial aborted after juror fell asleep

The trial of a former police officer on more than 50 child sex and pornography charges has been aborted after one of the jury members kept falling asleep.

Wayne Paul Mason, 42, has pleaded not guilty in the District Court to a string of offences connected with relationships he had with teenage girls he met as a youth group leader and karate teacher at a Baptist Church in Sydney's south-west.

The trial, which began on Tuesday, was expected to go for eight weeks.

Yesterday afternoon, Judge David Frearson told the jury they were dismissed because one of the panel members kept falling asleep and had missed part of the evidence.

A new jury is to be empanelled on Monday.
