A getaway car used in an attempted armed robbery of a home has crashed into a mini-bus carrying elderly people in Sydney's eastern suburbs.
The car, a stolen bronze-coloured BMW 4WD, crashed into the bus and another car on Maroubra Road at Maroubra just before 3pm on Friday.
Police say the same car was used in the attempted armed robbery of a home on Gubbetah Road at Little Bay 40 minutes before the crash.
Nine people suffered minor injuries in the collision - eight elderly patients on the bus and the driver of the other car.
An off-duty police officer who came to assist those hurt noticed the BMW driver acting suspiciously and attempted to arrest him before a fight broke out and the man was able to run off.
Police were still searching for him late Friday although the search was scaled back at 4pm.
It is believed up to three people were involved in the attempted robbery but that the driver was the only person in the BMW at the time of the crash.
He is described as being of Caucasian appearance, with a moustache and short brown hair. The man was wearing a white ‘Henleys’ brand T-shirt, dark blue jeans with blue running shoes with fluorescent markings.
Police have urged anyone with information about the man or the crash to come forward.
