He said one of his friends had mistaken his leg for the catch of the day.
‘‘My mate thought I was a fish,’’ the victim told emergency services.
It could not be established whether the accident occurred in the water, but according to one of his friends, the victim and another man were "mucking around" when the gun went off.
He was treated at the scene and then transported to the Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick, with the spear still in his leg.
‘‘The man is recovering now in a stable condition,’’ a spokeswoman for the hospital said.
