Police are investigating the cause of a fire at a Cootamundra home in which a dead man was found.

Fire and rescue, police and ambulance staff were called to the fire on Saturday afternoon at a house on Berthong Street, near the town's showgrounds.

The body of a man was found inside the property soon after the fire was put out.

He is yet to be officially identified. A NSW Police spokesman said the process might take some time given the damage caused by the fire.

Police officers established a crime scene and specialist investigators are examining the area today to determine the fire's cause.

NSW Police said on Sunday morning it would prepare a report for the coroner.
