Two locals walking near Thredbo River about 2.30pm on Wednesday spotted the body of the man a short distance from the bank of the river, about 10 kilometres from Jindabyne.
The man, aged in his 60s, is believed to be a local fisherman, who police say may have slipped or collapsed into the river.
A crime scene was established at the river, near Alpine Way.
The man is yet to be formally identified. Police are attempting to notify the man's family.
Police say they do not believe the death to be suspicious. Inquiries into the man's death are continuing, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
The Snowy Hydro SouthCare helicopter was originally tasked out to perform a water rescue mission in Jindabyne about 3.15pm, but announced on Twitter just before 4pm that it had been called off.
