A man who was preparing his truck for work on Thursday morning has been left in an induced coma after an apparent hit-and-run.

Police say the 33-year-old man was attending to his 25-tonne truck on Carter Street at Sydney OIympic Park when he was hit about 5.20am. He was wearing a high-visibility vest at the time.

The man was found lying on the road with injuries including to his head and was rushed to Westmead Hospital in a serious condition.

Investigators are at a loss to explain how he came to be struck by a vehicle because they are yet to find any witnesses.

They are urging anybody who knows anything about the incident to come forward.
