A Sydney man has been shot after he was ambushed by two men outside a Balmain apartment block in the city’s inner-west.

The 27-year-old victim has told police he had just pulled into the apartment block’s driveway when he was confronted by the men at 8pm on Tuesday.

The man was shot once in the right buttock and has told officers the two men, both of Middle Eastern appearance, then stole his girlfriend’s Silver Mazda and drove off.

On Wednesday morning, the burnt-out car was found dumped in Annandale.

The victim is believed to be known to police but has no known gang links and was “not a known target”.

Inspector Michael Dykes said a second bullet was found in a nearby neighbour’s car parked in Foy Street.

“We believe the gunmen have left in the black sports car they arrived in and the victim’s car,” he said. “The victim has provided a brief version of his recollection of the incident however he hasn’t indicated any motive or any reason he was targeted.”

The victim was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.

He has given a version of the night’s events but is not fully cooperating with police.

The Foy Street apartment belongs to his girlfriend but the victim is known to frequently stay at the address.

Neighbours reported hearing a loud argument outside the block in the moments leading up to the shooting.

Police were late on Tuesday canvassing the area around Foy Street.
