A man has died after he was hit by two cars on the M4 motorway, causing a multi-car pile-up, on Saturday evening.

The man was crossing three lanes of traffic near Church Street, Parramatta, when he was hit.

Police say emergency services were called about 7.30pm but the man died at the scene.

The accident caused chaos on the M4 with several other cars smashing into the cars that killed the pedestrian.

A number of roads have been closed, including the M4 eastbound, west of Church Street.

The man and woman who were driving the cars that hit the pedestrian have been taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.
