A 35-year-old man has died after being struck by a large wave and swept out to see while rock fishing with friends at a beach near Lake Macquarie on Saturday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to Redhead bluff, just north of Redhead Beach about 3pm after reports a man had been washed into the ocean.
The two friends the man had been fishing with raised the alarm and emergency services arrived a short time later.
Lake Macquarie police assisted by NSW Ambulance helicopters and the Redhead Surf Life Saving Club, commenced a search of the area.
The man was later found near a rock ledge and pronounced dead.
Police will now prepare a report for the information of the Coroner.
Officers have urged rock fisherman to exercise "extreme caution and constantly monitor the ocean for any deterioration in conditions".
They said it is "vital to wear appropriate clothing and have immediate access to safety equipment at all times".
