A friend of a man who drowned in the Hawkesbury River at Windsor says the 25-year-old was trying to swim to the other river bank when he simply "went under".
Friends are paying tribute online to Scott Mackenzie, whose body was recovered from the river at 10.40pm on Wednesday, about five hours after he disappeared.
Police said a group of friends had gone swimming in the river just west of the Windsor Bridge just before 6pm on Wednesday. However, Mr Mackenzie soon got into trouble and went under the surface.

One man wrote on Facebook that he was with Mr Mackenzie at the time, but could do nothing to save him.
"He was swimming over the river, then all of a sudden he went under," Bradley Mccarthy wrote.
Mr Mccarthy said he and his friends swam over to try to rescue Mr Mackenzie, "but by the time we got over there he was gone".
All attempts to find him failed, he said.
Police said officers from the Hawkesbury Local area command and other emergency services were alerted and began searching the river.
About 10.40pm on Wednesday, his body was found in the area where he was last seen swimming.
"There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident," police said in a statement.
