Sydney's newest coastal bush trail was opened on Saturday and the 1.15-kilometre walkway opens up the western section of Malabar Headland National Park and provides public access to Malabar Headland,  an area that was only recently re-opened for the public for the first time in 100 years.

The new walk on the western section is a circular loop and links up with the coastal Boora Point Walking Track.

“This new track is critical in providing a healthy habitat for humans, wildlife and plants and ensures that Randwick remains a liveable city," Randwick Mayor Lindsay Shurey said, despite the new track fronting the New South Wales Rifle Association and being located near two other gun clubs and rifle ranges.

Officials confirmed this new Western Walking Track is located in an area of the headland but will not be impacted by shooting days at the ANZAC Rifle Range.

The newly opened section means locals and visitors now have the option to complete a 4 kilometre loop around Malabar Headland.

“The community have fought decades for this area to be protected and made accessible, so I’m absolutely thrilled with the result. You can now make your way into the heart of Malabar Headland National Park to enjoy the bushland and catch some beautiful views,” Member for Coogee Bruce Notley-Smith said.

The walk now joins South Maroubra Beach with Malabar Beach and there are now plans to build a continuous path along the entire coastline between Clovelly in the north and La Perouse in the south.
