Thousands take on Sun Run

Thousands of keen runners sweated their way from Dee Why to Manly this morning in The Sydney Morning Herald Sun Run, as part of the city's ultimate sporting weekend on the northern beaches.

This year a new 10 kilometre course was added to the existing 7km course.

David Nilsson was the first male over the line in the new course, in 31 minutes and 49 seconds, while Victoria Mitchell won the female category, finishing the course in 36 minutes and 15 seconds.

First in the 7km race was Scott Dowse in 25 minutes and 46 seconds and Lucy Starrat took out the top female spot, crossing the line in 27 minutes and 1 second.

One of Australia's largest ocean swims, The Sydney Morning Herald Cole Classic, will be held tomorrow from Shelly Beach to Manly.

The two events are expected to raise more than $200,000 for at least 800 charities including the Dee Why and Manly Life Saving Clubs.
