Friends and neighbours of the family whose 20-month old toddler died after being struck by a reversing car in the home driveway have described a happy, cheery child from a loving family.

The boy died at Westmead Children's hospital from head injuries after he walked behind a reversing car in the driveway of his family's Wahroonga home at about 2pm on Friday.

Detectives from Ku-ring-gai were still inspecting the home and driveway on Saturday afternoon.

The child's parents, described as a very pleasant and professional couple by their neighbours on Sydney's north shore, were not at home.

"He was a lovely toddler, full of energy, like toddlers are," said one friend at the house.

The family also have a young daughter.

After being struck by the car, the boy was first taken to Sydney Adventist Hospital, before being taken to Westmead Children's Hospital. Police are preparing a report for the coroner.

"They were a really, really nice family, and with beautiful children," said a neighbor.

The federal government's "Child Pedestrian Safety: 'driveway deaths' and 'low-speed vehicle run-overs' Australia 2001-2010 report" said 66 children aged under 14 were killed in the 10-year period and 483 seriously injured in the eight-year period 2002-2010 by being hit by a four-wheeled motor vehicle around the home. On many occasions, the person driving the car was a relative.
