Virgin Australia passenger jet forced to divert to Brisbane

A Virgin Australia passenger aircraft bound for Los Angeles was forced to divert to Brisbane on Wednesday afternoon following a security threat which is understood to have been a hoax.

The Boeing 777, which had departed from Sydney at about 11am, dumped fuel before it landed at Brisbane Airport in the late afternoon.

The plane has since been checked by police and is due to depart Brisbane for LA at 10pm (Brisbane time).

A Virgin spokeswoman said all passengers and crew on VA1 had safely disembarked the twin-aisle plane

"A full search of the aircraft has been conducted by the AFP, and the AFP has confirmed the travelling public and aircraft have been cleared of any potential danger." she said.

"The safety of our guests and team members is always our highest priority."
