Woman drowns as pair swept from rocks
A YOUNG woman, aged 27 from Bankstown, has drowned after being swept off rocks near Avoca Beach, according to Gosford police and surf lifesavers.
Another woman - a 25-year-old from Casula - was in a critical but stable condition at Gosford Hospital on Wednesday night after being flown from Avoca.
Three nippers, aged 13 and 14, kept the two women above water while waiting for surf lifesavers, said central coast duty officer for surf life saving, Stuart Harvey.
A kayaker spotted the women struggling in the water on Wednesday afternoon and taken to the beach to get help, a Surf Life Saving NSW spokeswoman said.
The kayaker passed the nippers, who were on boards, and asked them to help the women until lifeguards could rescue them. Lifeguards performed CPR on one woman but she was pronounced dead when the ambulance arrived.
''Our hearts go out to the family of the drowned woman but thankfully the second patient is alive due to the quick actions of both the young board paddlers and the lifeguards,'' Mr Harvey said.
