Starting the final in third place, Balogh couldn't continue her brilliant form as she missed 10 shots in the last round.
Prior to the final she had missed just three of a possible 75 shots all day.
But in the end the Queanbeyan shooter couldn't keep up her scintillating form, dropping four shots early and then failing to recover.
Balogh won the gold medal at the Athens Olympics in 2004.
However, she missed selection for Beijing and contemplated retirement at the start of the year.
She rediscovered her best form and convinced herself she was still capable of competing at Olympic level.
She proved she could until some minor stumbles cost her dearly.
Italy's Jessica Rossi took the gold medal with a world record of 99 from 100 shots in a super display of shooting.
