We were not disappointed walking into the food hall at the athletes’ village for the first time this week – a tent fit for thousands, with all the food you can imagine . . . including Maccas! At the Olympics, surely not?

It has been pretty empty since we arrived, except for McCafe which is not helping with my caffeine addiction. I’m assuming most people will be saving it for the end of their events to indulge in a cheeseburger and fries.

We were taken to our rooms in the village with the team split into two apartments. There were drawings from schools around Australia on the walls with encouraging messages and cute pictures. We also added our own motivational quotes and flags to really get into the spirit.

We were inducted into the village by Laurie Lawrence on behalf of the AOC and presented with a plaque commemorating our selection for Australia.

He had an inspiring poem for us and we were brought to the brink of tears as we all joined in singing Waltzing Matilda while getting a photo with the boxing kangaroo and the Olympic rings.

It was great to check out the rest of the village and in particular ‘‘the Globe’’ or games room with everything from pool tables, Wii consoles, giant connect four and Jenga, to an in-house cinema and karaoke room.

There was a ‘‘bar’’ in the middle that consisted of Powerade, Coke, and water – although we were given a token to put into any drink machines placed throughout the village to get free drinks whenever we pleased.

The international section was also an exciting area with a beauty salon that painted flags on nails.

The next day as we were walking into breakfast I sat down and looked to see who the Australian next to me was sitting with the team . . . none other than Steve Waugh! I didn’t really hide my excitement well, saying ‘‘hi’’ in an unrecognisable octave.

We have played Great Britain and Holland in practice games and are continually learning before the Olympics come around.

Our Games begin with a clash against New Zealand tomorrow at 5.30pm Canberra time.

-Canberra’s Hockeyroo Anna Flanagan is competing at the London Olympics and will give an insider’s view to the Games.
