Mills nailed a clutch three-pointer with no time left on the clock to lift the Boomers to a 82-80 win over Russia in their last match of the preliminary rounds at the London Olympics.

Trailing by one point with four seconds to go, Joe Ingles dished off a pass to Mills who delivered under pressure.

The Boomers are now preparing for a nightmare quarter final against the best team in the world - the United States.

But after beating the previously-undefeated Russia, even overcoming a team of superstars and millionaires seems possible.Mills’ clutch play came just two days after he scored a tournament high of 39 points against Great Britain. And while he had a quiet game overall, he stood tall when he was needed most.

''It’s one of those shots that you always dream of making and when you do it against a team like Russia who have been great, it’s good for the confidence and the rhythm going into the next game,'' Mills said.

''We’ve got to [believe we can beat the US], this is what the Olympic Games is all about - playing against the best.

''They’re the best and what better way to go into the quarter final than with the belief we have.''

While Australia has struggled in most events in London, the Basketball Arena has delivered some of the most memorable moments for the Boomers and Opals. First it was Belinda Snell nailing a shot from inside her own half to send the Opals’ match against France into overtime by levelling the score on the buzzer.

Next was Elizabeth Cambage becoming the first female to slam dunk at an Olympics.Mills followed that up with a 39-point performance against Great Britain and made it even sweeter with his three-point winning shot.The Boomers had led for most of the match, but found themselves trailing in the dying seconds.

Joe Ingles had scored 20 points while Mills had just 10.But the defining play was always going to be left to Mills and he didn’t disappoint, adjusting after Ingles’ pass bounced off a Russian player’s head and watching his shot hit the bottom of the net.

The result didn’t have any bearing on where the Boomers finished in their pool.They finished fourth and will play the top ranked team from the opposite side of the draw - the LeBron James and Kobe Bryant led US.

Mills is the only NBA player in the Boomers squad, but he has no doubt Australia can cause another upset.

The Boomers lost to the US in the quarter finals at the Beijing Games, but Mills said ''there’s a different vibe and a different feeling''.

''I’m excited, this is why you play at te Olympics, this is what it’s about,'' Mills said.

''We’re going up against the best and this is a great opportunity, this is what you live for and work for.''

Boomers coach Brett Brown hopes his inside knowledge as an assistant for the San Antonio Spurs helps his team's preparation.

''I’m very familiar with what we’re about to encounter ... it's about having this situation and looking forward to playing this level of talent,'' Brown said.

''A lot of guys want to use this as a measuring stick and we look forward to continuing our form against the world’s best players.''
