The 2008 Beijing Olympics launched Mills’s professional basketball career and the former Marist College student is hoping his efforts in London will breathe new life into his on-court performances.
Mills has been a rollercoaster of extreme highs and disappointing lows since bursting on to the international stage four years ago.
He was still at St Mary’s College in the United States when he played for Boomers at the Olympics. Less than a year later he was drafted into NBA – the world’s best league – to join the Portland Trail Blazers.
But a foot injury in his first week of practice limited his immediate impact. He saw limited game time and has since played for the Melbourne Tigers, the Xinjiang Tigers in China and is now with the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA.
The Olympics will provide the perfect launching pad for the 23-year-old to emerge as a star again.
