The Opals beat Brazil 67-61 with Jackson scoring 18 points to become the leading scorer in Olympic women's basketball history.

Superstar Jackson passed her old rival Lisa Leslie when she scored her 489th point in the third quarter.

But the milestone did little to impress the Opals captain and opening ceremony flag bearer as she was continually frustrated with the way the match was officiated by the referees.

Jackson is at her fourth Olympics after making her debut in Sydney 2000.

She has three silver medals and wants to break through for the only trophy not in her cabinet - an Olympic gold medal.

The six-point win will get that mission back on track after the Opals suffered a shock loss to France two days ago.

That was the first defeat the Opals had experienced in the preliminary rounds since 1996.

But the clash against Brazil was almost too close for comfort. Despite cruising by most of the games and at times leading by 11 points, Brazil closed to within four points with just 16 seconds remaining.

The Opals have plenty to improve on to ensure they are a contender.

Opposition teams will sniff a weakness and try to exploit the three-time defending silver medalists.

But after a slow and sloppy start, the Opals established their dominance against the lower-ranked Brazilians.

It took them five minutes before they could establish a decent buffer, but once they got the lead things started to click.

Jackson had seven points at the start of the second quarter, but the superstar is yet to hit her brilliant best in the tournament.

Instead it was the next generation Opals superstar - Elizabeth Cambage - who took control.

Cambage had a massive height advantage over her rivals.

The 20-year-old has had a stunted start to her debut Olympics. She had "ants in my pants" in the first game and got bashed and belted by a physical French side in the second game.

But she showed her class with a 17-point performance

Jackson started the game needing 10 points to pass Leslie. She clinched the milestone with a free throw late in the third quarter.

The Opals will play Russia on Saturday.
