A tangled business
Welcome to our visualisation of the ASX 200.
Above you will see a representation of the S&P/ASX 200 index, the benchmark index of publicly-listed companies in Australia.
If you are having trouble viewing this application, you may need to update your browser.
The larger, brightly-coloured nodes represent companies listed in that index. Their sizes vary with the value of the company and their colours transfer from yellow to pink with the number of directors on each company's board.
The smaller, beige-coloured nodes represent directors. You can see that each line connecting one company to another passes through a director. This indicates that that director sits on both company boards.
The data is sourced from the ASX. It was collected in mid-July in order to provide time for our partners to collate data around it. We have kept up with a number of board changes since then, but there may be some moves that are not depicted in the map.
If you click on a company or a director, the immediate connections that entity has will be emphasised and a panel will open on the left-hand side of the screen. This panel can be used to track which directors sit on each company's board. In the case of directors with mulitple directorships, the panel can be used to track the connections from company to company.
Alternatively, you can type the name of either a company or a director into the search field at the top of the screen to be taken to their place in the map.
If you click on a director's node, or click on a director's name in the left-hand window, you will see a "Who's Who" logo next to that director's name. Click on the logo to see biographical information provided by Who's Who Australia.
