Having gifted cartoonists and headline writers with the best ever metaphors and analogies - Pandora’s Box, Achilles heel, wooden horse, etc - democracy’s founding fathers and mothers, the Greeks, now find themselves in a flammable position, with every other country blaming them for their own economic woes.
As editors fight each other for the next “Greek tragedy” headline, the international community looks towards us and reminds us how lucky we are. Believe it or not.
This week’s espresso video animation goes continental and weaves together some classic Greek and European imagery and audio, and inflames the situation further.

It ended 2 years ago. But.....they got olives, feta, bread and baklava. They'll survive.

Only thing missing was how the fire will spread beyond the boundaries. But she'll be right mate. As long as we have surf, rocks and BBQ duck the world looks great.

Greek democracy was always a myth. the slaves didn't vote etc. It resembled England more in the days of Edmund Burke. Ken Henry said it all.. the eurozone was never going to work. My old history lecturer defined Europe as divided in two. The old Roman Empire was west of the Rhine and south of the Danube .The reformation divided Europe into 'Catholic' and 'Protestant' economies . The former in simplistic terms represented the 'welfare' corporate state. The latter developed individualism and and the 'protestant ethic'.Germany, Britain, Holland etc were never going to create a mix with Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece. Does Europe have the capacity to change the mindset of its history ?

- Democracy has always been a myth.
  Real power is exercised by money.
  A politician will not be elected unless he has money to spend on his or her campaign.
  Political donations come with obligations towards the donor. Favours and accepting influence.
  Anyone who thinks by ticking a box on the ballot paper is exercising power is a fool.
  It is a procedure to make the voters feel that they have a say in how the country is run.
  Recent examples in AUS have shown where power lies.
  Just look at those well financed campaign by the miners and the clubs. No need to say more.
