Greens could be cut down by colleague

ACT Greens Shane Rattenbury and Caroline Le Couteur could face a challenge to their incumbency as lead candidates for their party in the Molonglo electorate in this year's territory election.

Northern suburbs activist Alan Kerlin has nominated for the Greens' preselection process.

Mr Kerlin, who did not respond to requests for an interview yesterday, has been a leading player in the Gungahlin Community Council for several years.

It is unclear if Mr Kerlin will challenge for one of the two ''lead candidate'' positions available on the Greens' ticket for the seven-member electorate.

In the party's preselection process, candidates can opt to run for lead candidate position or settle for being a ''support candidate.''

He has been vocal in campaigns to attract more jobs and investment to the new developing northern suburbs although he has failed in his efforts to attract a federal government department to Gungahlin.

The former Australian Democrat led a failed push to redraw the territory's electoral boundaries last year, creating a seven-member ''super electorate'' that would have kept Gungahlin suburbs voting as a bloc, to the advantage of a Gungahlin-based candidate.

But after a concerted backlash from residents of the inner-north, stronghold of Mr Rattenbury and Ms Le Couteur, Elections ACT opted to make minimal changes to the boundaries which are expected to have little impact on the numbers when the territory votes in October.

Nominations for Greens preselection closed last week and the party expects to have its ticket finalised by early next month.
