Boy bitten by shark 'lucky' to escape more serious injuries

The 11-year-old boy bitten by a reef shark in shallow waters off Heron Island on Tuesday was lucky the shark's teeth had avoided most major arteries in his leg, surgeons at Lady Cilento Children's Hospital said.

The boy received surgery to his right calf muscle and would remain in hospital for at least a week while the wound was monitored. He was expected to make a full recovery, a hospital spokesperson said.
