Public Health Physician Dr Bhakti Vasant said the infected person visited Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary last Sunday, Woolworths on Fifth Avenue in Marsden on Wednesday, and Logan Hospital on Thursday and Friday.

Public Health physician Dr Bhakti Vasant urged anyone who visited these areas around the same time to ensure they were immune to measles.

“Measles is one of the most infectious of all communicable diseases and is spread by tiny
droplets through coughing and sneezing,” Dr Vasant said.

“Symptoms usually start around 10 days after contact, but can occur between seven and 18 days
after contact with an infectious person.

“The initial symptoms of measles include fever, lethargy, runny nose, moist cough and sore
and red eyes. This is followed a few days later by a blotchy, red rash.

“The rash often starts on the face then becomes widespread over the body.

“Vaccinations are recommended for anyone born during or since 1966, who has not had two
documented doses of measles, mumps, rubella vaccine or had proven measles."

Anyone who develops measles-like symptoms in the next three weeks should stay home and contact their doctor for advice, according to health officials.

A baby boy was also confirmed to have measles earlier this month. He had visited a major shopping centre north of Brisbane and spent hours at the city's children’s hospital emergency department.
