A six-year-old girl has died in hospital after a kangaroo smashed through a car windscreen west of Brisbane.
The kangaroo was hit by the car, smashing through the front windscreen before exiting through the rear windscreen.
The six-year-old girl was sitting in the back seat with her sibling, as her family travelled west on the Warrego Highway at Kingsthorpe, on the outskirts of Toowoomba, about 3am on Sunday.
"It appears the kangaroo actually hit the child," a police spokesman said.
The girl’s mother was driving, while her father was in the front passenger seat.
It is understood the family was returning home to Kingsthorpe from Toowoomba.
The girl's parents and sibling survived the crash with only minor injuries, but the six-year-old was rushed to Toowoomba Base Hospital in a critical condition.
Her parents made the heartbreaking decision to turn off her life support early Sunday afternoon and she passed away soon after.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
