The move of Shield matches to the Allan Border Field at Albion would keep weekends at the Gabba free for more popular Twenty20 matches and big-ticket concerts.

Stadiums Queensland has booked Taylor Swift at the Gabba on November 6, after Adele played to about 60,000 for two nights just over a year ago.

Queensland Cricket chief executive Max Walters said moving Shield matches would let Stadiums Queensland use the Gabba for more lucrative concerts.

“If that means Stadiums Queensland can make more money out of the Gabba, then that would mean stadiums upgrades and we would get better Test cricket back,” Mr Walters said.

The Gabba is ranked as Australia’s fifth-best cricket venue and recently was denied the right to host a crowd-drawing Australia v India Test Match, which Mr Walters said was "a bit of a worry".

“Stadiums Queensland is pretty honest about that and we want to work with them,” he said.

“In the short term we love playing our Shield cricket at the Gabba because it’s the best wicket and it’s bouncy and hard and true and fast, not like a drop-in, but in the medium to long term, where we normally play five games at the Gabba, we might play three and play two here at Allan Border Field.

“We might next year play two at the Gabba and three here [Allan Border Field] and then gradually ease into Alan Border Field in the longer term."

Crowds at Sheffield Shield games have declined. Last year's final, won by Victoria, was played in Alice Springs.

It was a far cry from the days of March 1995 when a packed Gabba house saw Queensland win its first Shield final against South Australia by an innings and 110 runs.

Mr Walters said if Queensland made the Sheffield Shield final this year, the match will be played at Allan Border Field.

His comments come as Queensland Cricket and Cricket Australia confirmed they would contribute $4.25 million to an aggressive pitch for an extra $14 million over four years from state and federal governments to build a National Cricket Campus in Brisbane.

That National Cricket Campus would include major upgrades to both Allan Border Field and Shaw Park to lure night games, Sheffield Shield games and women’s Ashes and T20 games.

The funding would cover new lights, new practice wickets, a new grandstand, training facilities, new drainage and boundary extensions.

“It will develop pathways for junior players into underage championships and for our elite players to play for Australia and for Queensland,” Mr Walters said.

Mr Walters, who averaged in the 30s when opening the batting for Queensland (1975-79), then managing director of the Seven Network before joining Queensland Cricket, said the bid wanted to appeal to authorities hosting the World T20 in 2020.

“Allan Border Field needs a drainage upgrade. If you get a thunderstorm at the Gabba, you can play again in an hour,” he said.

“However if you get a thunderstorm at Allan Border Field it means hours under the super soakers.”

The Allan Border Field boundary opposite the Stuart Law Stand also needs to be pushed back by 20 metres, he said.

Sports Minister Mick de Brenni said the “impressive” Allan Border Field proposal would be evaluated as part of the 2018-19 state budget.

“Whilst we generally don’t fund private infrastructure and the recent election campaign clearly outlined our government’s priorities, I’m not ruling anything in or out,” Mr de Brenni said.

“Cricket’s proposal is impressive from a lobbying perspective, and clearly, significant effort and genuine vision are hallmarks of this particular proposal.

“I’m conscious that players like Holly Furling and Ben Cutting all started out at grassroots level, and diverting funds away from these clubs could mean that some players never get a start.”
