The most visible female leader in the state, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, made history as the first Australian woman to be elected for two terms as premier.

She said her focus was not on "making records", but she was proud the Australian milestone was a Queensland milestone.

Ms Palaszczuk's cabinet is 50 per cent female and 50 per cent male.

Facing off against Ms Palaszczuk will be opposition leader Deb Frecklington, who assumed the mantle late last year after the LNP's loss at the state election.

It is the first time the merged LNP has had a female leader.

And when Queensland Parliament resumes on Tuesday, after a three and a half month break, it will be the first time the leaders on both sides of the chamber are women.

Standing next to Ms Palaszczuk will be Deputy Premier Jackie Trad, who now has an additional powerful role in cabinet, as Treasurer.

Also at the top will be Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath, who added leader of the house to her job description, which means she will be responsible for organising government business and tactics in Parliament.

Back at Queensland Labor HQ, the party has its first female state secretary, Julie-Ann Campbell, and Sarah Mawhinney this week started as assistant state secretary.

"This shows that Queensland Labor is leading the way on women's representation," Ms Campbell said.

"When Parliament opens [this] week, Labor will have 48 per cent women members compared to the LNP's meagre 15 per cent."

Ms Campbell took over from Evan Moorhead, who took up a senior role in the Premier's office, while former state secretary Jon Persley went to federal Labor leader Bill Shorten's office.

Ms Mawhinney, who started this week, was previously the vice president of the Queensland Labor Women's Network and ran the election campaign for successful Mansfield candidate Corrine McMillan.

In the Queensland Parliament, 30 out of the total 93 members are women - or 32 per cent - which does not break the 2001 record of 37 per cent female representation.

Griffith University political expert Paul Williams said he did not necessarily subscribe to the theory that more women in politics meant more consensus-style decision making.

"The adversarial nature is really reflective in and of the two-party system," he said.

Dr Williams said during the previous term, Ms Trad and then-deputy opposition leader Ms Frecklington "gave as good as they got".

"I'm not expecting that to change now Deb Frecklington is in the top spot," he said.

"Does anyone think the Parliament is going to be better behaved because there's more women in the top jobs? I don't think so."

Meanwhile, a disparate bunch will sit on Queensland's crossbench in 2018.

The biggest bloc comes from Katter's Australian Party - Robbie Katter, Shane Knuth and newcomer Nick Dametto.

There will also be a new independent, Noosa MP Sandy Bolton, and One Nation member Stephen Andrew.

The Greens have their first MP elected to the Queensland Parliament with Michael Berkman.

Mr Berkman said he wanted to see "real action on corporate donations" in politics, extending further than Labor's proposed ban on property developer donations.

"Our immediate priority is a ban on all for-profit corporate donations," he said.

"If we want to see meaningful long-term reform in the way that money influences politics, we need to look at very broad reform and the potential for publicly-funded campaigns."

Mr Berkman said he also wanted Labor to move quickly on its commitment to reform abortion laws.

However, despite their best efforts, the six crossbenchers will be unable to quash the Palaszczuk government legislation by teaming up with the opposition, as Labor holds a majority with 48 seats to the LNP's 39.

On Tuesday, February 13 at 10am, all 93 members of Parliament will be sworn in and new Speaker Curtis Pitt will be formally elected.

On Wednesday, February 14, about 1.40pm, the Australian Defence Force will fire a 19-gun salute from cannons in River Terrace Park at Kangaroo Point as part of the opening of Parliament ceremony, before Governor Paul de Jersey officially opens the Parliament at 2.10pm.

On Thursday, Parliament will sit from 9.30am.

New "family-friendly" sitting hours will be introduced, a move welcomed by Ms Trad.

"I'm very pleased that the leader of the house [Ms D'Ath], who is a mum, and knows how hard it is to get up in the morning after you've sat until 2am or 3am in the morning to pack the lunches for school and then to get back to Parliament," she said.

"I think every Queenslander would actually agree that it's not sensible and it's certainly not akin to 21st-century thinking for Parliament to sit into the wee hours of the morning in order to pass legislation."
