Bianca Faith Girven, 22, was found in a white van parked outside the Mount Gravatt home of her boyfriend Rhys Austin in March 2010. She later died in hospital and her partner was charged with murder.

Ms Girven was a mother, charity worker, sister, daughter and passionate campaigner of women’s rights. A memorial featuring yarn, flowers, pictures, notes and gifts was created at a tree just metres from where her body was found, at the base of Mount Gravatt.

About 5½ years ago, Sonia Anderson, Bianca's mother, was contacted by Holland Park LNP councillor Krista Adams.

Ms Anderson said Cr Adams wanted to "remove everything at the tree and suggested a bench instead, to be put somewhere else in the park".

"I wasn’t prepared to let the memorial tree go," Ms Anderson said.

"It has been the main focal point for our family and strangers. Flowers have been left there for me and Bianca and I go to visit a couple of times per week."

Since the initial contact from Cr Adams, Ms Anderson said the reasons why council wanted to relocate the memorial had changed.

"Initially, a child asked it's mother what happened there and the mother didn’t want to explain, then the memorial was a health and safety issue and then council wanted to be able to mow around the tree," she said.

Ms Anderson won't back down, and demands every part of the memorial remains untouched.

"I’m not backing down, the tree is what is significant. To have a park bench, I may as well have it on Mars because it doesn’t mean anything to me," she said.

"Anyone associated with domestic violence believes this is the only public place to honour a person killed by domestic homicide because most people are killed in houses, so you can’t have a memorial there."

Morningside councillor Kara Cook, who founded Cook Legal - Australia's first private expert domestic violence law firm, said council's ongoing discussion regarding the memorial was "unacceptable".

"I think it's appalling that council has subjected the family to additional trauma in terms of raising this issue with them initially," she said.

With one Australian woman murdered by a current for former partner every week last year, Cr Cook called for Cr Adams to apologise and demanded council leave the memorial alone.

"This site is significant not only to the family, but to the broader community in terms of raising awareness around domestic and family violence," she said.

"As we know, domestic violence often happens within the confines of the home environment and this particular location is a public site, which is a reminder to everyone of the public nature of what has occurred."

In response, lord mayor Graham Quirk said his council had always been a strong opponent of domestic violence and addressed claims surrounding the relocation of the memorial.

"There has never been a situation where the Bianca Girven memorial would be removed," Cr Quirk said.

"Cr Adams has in fact been engaged with Bianca’s mum for some time about the establishment of a permanent memorial.

"So what we have out there in Mount Gravatt is some knitted items around the trees and they will stay.

"There are also some loose items around the base of that tree, they have been the subject of some debate.

"But the intention is to establish a permanent memorial by way of some seating, which can incorporate into them some of those (loose) items that were at the base of the tree."

Cr Adams said in a written statement she was scheduled to meet with Ms Anderson in the coming days.

“We want to show Bianca’s family respect and compassion by providing a safe and friendly place for the family to reflect in the long term, which is also suitable for a public park," she said.

“We are in the process of finalising designs for the memorial, and I am meeting with Sonia in coming weeks to progress the project.

“The initial proposal includes a park bench which would be personalised by the family, a memorial plaque and flower plantings designed to attract butterflies, which were a special love of Bianca’s.”
