The wave heights exceeded expectations on Sunday, with the Gold Coast recording peaks in excess of 4.5 metres at Palm Beach and almost 6 metres at Tweed Heads. The Sunshine Coast recorded between 3.5 and 4.5-metre peaks.

The Bureau of Meteorology expected an easterly swell of 2-2.5 metres with seas about 1-1.5 metres on Sunday, with similar dangerous surf conditions expected to last until at least Tuesday.

It was a similar story on the Sunshine Coast, with BoM predicting an easterly swell of 2-2.5 metres with seas about 1-1.5 metres on Sunday. The swell was expected to increase slightly to 2.5-3 metres on Monday before dropping to between 1.5 and 2 metres on Tuesday.

"A ridge of high pressure over southern waters should strengthen today with winds becoming more south to southeasterly," the weather bureau's south-east marine forecast read.

"This ridge will weaken temporarily on Monday, before strengthening once more into the middle of the week.

"Tropical Cyclone Gita is expected to curve onto a southward and then southerly track well off the southern Queensland coast over the next few days, resulting in a hazardous long-period easterly swell over southern waters, tending more southeasterly by Monday."

Surf Life Saving Queensland closed beaches between Southport and North Kirra on the Gold Coast on Sunday morning, after enforcing the same blanket ban the day before.

A matter of minutes later, SLSQ tweeted that all Gold Coast beaches were off-limits due to hazardous surf.

Boardwalk, Currimundi, Dicky Beach, Kawana Waters, Mudjimba, Sunshine Beach, Wurtulla and Mooloolaba Spit were also closed on the Sunshine Coast.

Currumbin Beach Vikings Surf Life Saving Club receptionist Leanne Steele said the club's carpark was full of water after the morning's "massive" swell.

"Don’t park in the carpark because your car might not be there when you come back," she said.

Ms Steele said guests were wading through the flooded carpark to reach the club. The SLSQ equipment stored underneath was protected by floodgates.
