Brisbane City Council has warned residents by the river, along low-lying areas and on the bayside to prepare for minor localised flooding.

Higher than normal tides are predicted for coastal and riverside locations across the state from Wednesday to Friday, due to a confluence of the super blue blood moon and increasing swell from a likely cyclone forming in the Coral Sea.

The Bureau of Meteorology predicted tide peaks of around 2.7 metres, exceeding the highest tide of the year by about half a metre.

The high tides are in part caused by a rare astral event occurring on Wednesday, when a super blue blood moon will be visible after moonrise.

Queensland Police has issued flood warnings for catchments around river ways and creeks in far north Queensland.

Scarborough resident Graham Davis said the combination of rough seas and higher than normal tides would likely cause flooding along Reef Point Esplanade and Second Avenue, as happened at high tide on January 3.

“Another potential problem is that these two combined weather situations will again pound and erode the red cliffs for which Redcliffe is so historically well-known,” he said.

“I would hope that authorities are closely monitoring the flooding of the streets and what might happen to the cliffs here at Redcliffe.”

Sandbags can be collected from Brisbane City Council locations across the city.

"These high tides are expected to be similar to the high tides experienced on 3-5 January 2018," a council spokesperson said.
