The 6pm news bulletin has been co-anchored by Mr McDonald and Sharyn Ghidella since 2013.
Mr McDonald told ABC Radio on Friday the decision for him to leave the program was mutual and any rumours his departure was about money were fiction.
“We never even talked about money, never even talked about what Sharon or anyone else earns. I don’t know what they earn, I don’t care what they earn,” he said.
“I’ve been doing it for five years now but I’ve been at Seven over the journey for just over 15 years and I just want to do some other things.”
Mr McDonald is understood to be pursuing broadcasting work with the network for the Commonwealth Games and then hoped to stay there.
“I wanted to do more sport and I wanted to do a bit of a hybrid role, I guess, and that’s sort of hard to do when you’re on the desk, but it is really a mutual decision,” he told the ABC.
Mr McDonald also owns a media business he has been running for several years.
