Sinkhole opens up on Sunshine Coast road

A section of road has caved in on the Sunshine Coast.

A sinkhole was reported to police on Wises Road near the Sugar Road roundabout in Maroochydore on Friday afternoon.

The hole was reportedly one metre in diameter.

A statement released by Sunshine Coast Council said the sinkhole opened up "following repairs to a damaged water main".

Unitywater, a water and sewerage services provider for the area, was working to repair the sinkhole.

​"Sunshine Coast Council is promptly assisting Unitywater to ensure the repairs are done as quickly as possible," the statement said.

Police have blocked traffic entering Sugar Road at Buderim Avenue and have asked motorists to avoid the area.
