The record levels have seen the state opposition put pressure on Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to introduce a real-time fuel price tracking service to allow motorists to compare and choose the best deal.

RACQ spokeswoman Renee Smith said Brisbane hit 153.2 cents per litre at its peak at the weekend, while Ipswich was the highest in South-east Queensland at 153.6 cents.

“There’s simply no good reason for prices to have gone this high," she said.

"While recent oil price hikes are the catalyst for increases at the bowser, the retailers have worsened the pain by boosting their retail margins, resulting in the outrageously high prices we’re seeing.

“We haven’t surpassed $1.50 per litre since October 2014 and it’s really going to hurt motorists wanting to fill the tank.

“The issue we have in Queensland is, currently, only select retailers provide price information, making it difficult for drivers to know where the cheap locations are,” she said.

“A transparent real-time petrol price data system is critical in helping give drivers the information they need and in turn, it will force retailers to do the right thing and charge the lowest prices."

LNP deputy leader Tim Mander said the fuel price problem could be solved immediately if the Labor government acted.

"Queenslanders are sick of getting ripped off at the petrol bowser," he said.

"Annastacia Palaszczuk needs to introduce real-time fuel price tracking, which in New South Wales is proven to save $6 for every tank of petrol."

Across the south-east, the average price of unleaded fuel per litre hit 151.3 cents in Moreton Bay, the Gold Coast peaked at 141.4 and the Sunshine Coast reached 138.9 cents.
