Two German tourists have been plucked from the roof of a four-wheel-drive that was swamped by floodwaters in north Queensland early Friday morning.

The pair was camping near a swimming hole at Barron on the northern outskirts of Cairns and woke about 7am to find their 4WD surrounded by floodwaters due to torrential overnight rain.

The couple called triple-0 and passing motorists also raised the alarm after seeing the distressed man and woman waving their arms from the roof of the vehicle.

Swift water rescue crews used an inflatable raft to carry the couple to dry land about 7.50am.

‘‘There are no reports of injuries,’’ a Queensland Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said.

Roads across the far north flooded after the heavy downpour overnight.

‘‘Firefighters are reminding far north Queensland residents, ‘If it’s flooded, forget it’. Never enter floodwaters by foot or in your car," the spokeswoman said.
