A man is in hospital under police guard after the stabbing death of a woman at an Upper Mount Gravatt hotel overnight.

The 27-year-old woman was found dead in a room at the Travelodge on Macgregor Street - near Garden City shopping centre - about 12.30am on Tuesday.

The man, 31, also had stab wounds and was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Police said he was in a stable condition.

Detective Acting Inspector Tod Reid said the pair was from overseas and it did not appear a third party was involved.

"[The man is] still is receiving treatment for his injuries and we're yet to determine when we'll actually be able to speak with him," he said.

Acting Inspector Reid said police were alerted when other hotel guests heard screams.

When officers forced their way into the room, they found the dead woman.

"The first response police were faced with a fairly difficult scene and we're going to make sure they receive the appropriate support ... it was quite confronting for them," he said.

Acting Inspector Reid said police were trying to contact the woman's relatives who were overseas.

Travelodge declined to comment.
