Still coming to terms with his shock axing on Tuesday, David Furner expressed his ambitions to continue coaching in the NRL.

''It's been a big couple of years but amazing I still want to coach,'' Furner texted Fairfax Media.

But there is no such clarity about the Furner dynasty at the Raiders, with his elder brother Don Furner saying he had not contemplated his ongoing position with the club.

The Furner family has been an integral party of the Raiders fabric since the start, Don Furner snr appointed the inaugural coach in 1982.

The family has had to endure accusations of nepotism within the club.

Don Furner has been in the Raiders administration for more than a decade and was deployed to the south coast on Tuesday afternoon by the Canberra board to deliver the news to his little brother.

Asked if he had considered his own position at the Raiders, Don Furner told ABC radio: ''Not at this stage no.''

Pressed, Don Furner said: ''I don't appoint myself to the position, if I'm not doing the right job I'll get the sack too... If I'm not doing the right job I'll get removed despite what my name is, likewise David.''

''I don't think it was easy for Dave either, because of his name. I think it possibly would have been easier if he had a different surname.''

Raiders chairman John McIntyre told Fairfax Media on Tuesday that Don Furner's position was not under threat, describing him as the ''ultimate pro''.

Despite telling his brother of the news, Don Furner said he had not seen the sacking coming beforehand. Don Furner denied he'd been involved in any of the player meetings or board discussions to sack David.

''I'm clearly as shocked as everybody else because I was left out of the discussions and I understand the reasons for that and the uniqueness of the situation with David being my brother.

''I take directions from the board, I just have to do my job and that's what I did.''

Furner said he contacted David by phone on his way to the coast on Tuesday, simply telling him ''I need to talk''.

''He knows full well how difficult the job is, coaching is a very difficult job and we're in a very volatile industry.

''He's grown up around footy and seen it happen, and I guess no one expects it's going to happen to them ... it's still very hard to swallow and I'm sure he's still coming to terms with it.

''He's a tough kid. The most important thing is he's my brother, I still love him, he's not done anything wrong it's just a tough business.''

Although player power contributed to the sacking of David Furner, Don Furner tried to deflect pressure off the players.

But the continuing misbehaviour of some players, particularly Josh Dugan and Blake Ferguson, undoubtedly contributed to David Furner's downfall. Senior players were angered that the trouble-makers were given so much leniency.

Don Furner said coaching had become man management ''24 hours a day''.

''[The players'] expectations are higher and higher every year. There's a lot made of Gen Y and there's a lot of work you've got to put into them and sometimes it's not repaid. But I don't think it's fair to pin it on one or two players.''
