A moment of madness put Parramatta halfback Chris Sandow in the sin-bin and cost the Eels on the scoreboard as Melbourne romped home 46-20 on Sunday in their NRL clash at AAMI Park.

Parramatta were left to rue a brain explosion in the 60th minute by Sandow who was binned for dissent after asking referee Ben Cummins: "How much are they paying you?" following a penalty against his team.

While the Eels were a man down, the Storm crossed for three tries which gave the home side the match-winning lead.

Melbourne scored eight tries with superstar fullback Billy Slater putting his Origin pain behind him with a starring performance.

Slater scored two tries and set up two others.

His NSW rival Jarryd Hayne was comparatively kept quiet.

On the back of the win, Craig Bellamy's team climbed into the top eight and went level with the Eels on 18 points.

Melbourne made a flying start and were up 18-0 after just 23 minutes.

Slater threw the final pass to winger Sisa Waqa for their opening try and then had points against his own name after some good lead-up work by five-eighth Ben Hampton.

Within five minutes, he was in again after a Hampton bomb fell back off some leaping contenders into his arms.

Parramatta finally had some possession and field position and started to threaten the tryline.

Centre Ryan Morgan, who replaced injured Blues winger Will Hopoate in the Eels' line-up, showed his class in a 30-metre run as he beat Slater to touch down.

The home side then lost concentration and, with only seconds remaining in the half, allowed Parramatta in again with five-eighth Corey Norman setting it up with a monster cross-field pass to trail 18-10.

The Storm started the second half as they did the first with Slater kicking into the in-goal for Waqa.

The Eels' Vai Toutai then crossed before Sandow's sin-binning stalled their momentum with Kurt Mann scoring a double and prop Bryan Norrie also touching down.

That put the score out to 40-16 before some late efforts by both sides kept the scoreboard ticking over.

  • How precious are the refs? You can pick a player up and drive his head into the ground - no sin bin. You can take someone's head off, throw all the punches you want - no sin bin. But mouth off to a ref about his integrity and it's a sin bin without question. Really? what's worse? Makes me think Sandow might have had a point.

    • You can't call the ref a cheat and expect to stay on the field. The second the ref puts up with that stuff he'll lose control of the game. Sandow was lucky not to be sent off!

That said the Storm get away with absolute murder in the ruck. They have so many different methods of slowing the play the ball down from the turtle, the flop, the little shove as the ball is played etc etc. I think the reason the refs don't see it is because of the sheer variety.

I can understand why Sandow was frustrated.

  • Sounds like Sandow has been living in Sydney so long that he has adopted the NSW culture of expecting refs to look after only his team. Paul Gallen is a classic example of this the way he constantly complains to the refs in origin. Could this explain why NSW has failed for 8 years even though they have the majority of players to choose from.

    • Referees, good or bad, and lets face it there are twice as many bad decisions now that we have two Refs, the Refs are in charge of the match and deserve player respect. Saying what was said belongs in the outer to be yelled out by frustrated supporters. If a player feels the need to say what was said perhaps he should observe the game from behind the fence rather than be a pivotal part of the match. Look what happened when he was sidelined!

      • Nice to see Slater play well when no pressure is on! Thanks for the SOO Slater you more than any other player for Qld should be held accountable for the series loss. Turn up when your not bruised and disappear when the going gets tough. As for the comment about refs its funny if Thurston, Smith or Slater said it no penalty and no repercussions just a waning. The NRL refs protect certain players its embarrassing that a small headbutt by Thurston means nothing but if Gallen or if any other payer with a bad rep did it a 3 week suspension would occur.

        • Fifty fifty calls went against Parramatta all game. Slater and Smith, hailed as heroes by all the usual suspects, connived advantage and manipulated the officials. The Eels were on the backfoot all game, and I think still played welll. I can understand Sandow's frustration - and a sinbin? Is anybody evaluating these two referees' performance today? Notice many of the preceding comments are from Queensland supporters. Wasn't it Melbourne playing today? Why have we got a team down there any way. Make it honest and bring back the Crushers.
