The NRL has cleared the way for Brad Fittler to make a rugby league return in the NRL Nines competition.

Earlier this month Fittler indicated his desire to the game with the Sydney Roosters at the Auckland Nines, 10 seasons since he retired.

For the last two weeks the Roosters have been locked in discussion that revolved around insurance and salary cap issues with the NRL about the former Kangaroo skipper's comeback.

On Wednesday head of football Todd Greenberg said the NRL had given the green light for Fittler's return.

However Fittler, 42 next month, is unlikely to line up alongside many of the Roosters superstars at the Nines.

The premiers' coach Trent Robinson has indicated he will rest his side's New Zealand and Australian Test stars to be ready for the World Club Challenge at Allianz Stadium on February 22, a week after the inaugural Nines tournament.

But Fittler may line up alongside NSW halfback Mitchell Pearce at the shortform tournament.

    • I wonder what the betting is on a try for Freddy in the third minute of the second game he plays when the wind is blowing from the south west and a crow is sitting on the second top branch of the third tree from the members stand gate so long as there has been a forward pass by the opposition team in the preceding ten minutes.

      • What a farce Easts have become. Who is making a comeback next, Kevin Hastings? David Barnhill? Dale Shearer? I guess this is what happens when you have no juniors.

        • @bouncing bunny : Yes - such a farce. Only a farcical side would have the temerity to sweep all before them and win the comp that your bunnies simply cannot.

        • I'm sorry I can't see any good coming out of this, he just won't be able to compete ... they will all be too big, too fit and too strong ... At 42 the knees, ankles, body are just not as agile, especially if you pushed your body to the limit 8 or so years ago ... Mind may say yes, but the body will just give way ... It will only take one strong hard tackle to knock him senseless ..... I hope I'm completely and utterly wrong for Freddie's sake ... He is a legend.
