Brett Morris bravely played most of State of Origin match with broken shoulder

The bravery of Blues winger Brett Morris has been rammed home after it was confirmed he played three-quarters of Wednesday's State of Origin opener, and pulled off a match-saving tackle on opposite number Darius Boyd, with a fracture and ligament damage to his shoulder.

A shattered Morris said on Friday night he would miss the rest of the interstate series, and twin brother Josh is is almost certainly out of the rest of the NSW campaign as well after being sidelined for six to eight weeks with a posterior cruciate injury.

"Absolutely devastated with the results from the scans.Shattered to miss games 2 & 3 of origin and plenty of games for the Red V," the Dragons flyer tweeted.

The extent the injury placed in context Morris' performance at Suncorp Stadium. He writhed in agony in the 19th minute after landing on his right shoulder as he scored the Blues' first try, but continued on despite what appeared a serious injury.

Later, in the 74th minute, his clutch tackle on Boyd on his own line preserved the 12-8 advantage of Laurie Daley's team, which they held onto in the face of a late Queensland onslaught.

The Dragons said on Friday that Morris would be sidelined for an indefinite period.

Daley is left counting the cost of the gutsy win in a classic first clash of the series, needing to replace his right-side outside backs who performed so gallantly and through the pain barrier. In the second half Josh Morris was told he may have an ACL tear in his knee but seeing Maroons centre Greg Inglis dashing away he put those concerns arise to race after him and drag him down.

Another of the wounded, captain Paul Gallen, received a cortisone injection in his neck, which he has had an ongoing problem for him, which flared up again during Wednesday's dogfight with Queensland.

Gallen was reportedly facing a recovery period of two to three weeks with no contact work, which could limit his preparation to lead the bid to wrap up a first Origin series triumph in nine years.

In better news Anthony Watmough is remarkably set to be back on the field only four days after tearing his bicep in the brutal contest after fears his season could be over.

Watmough, 30, was initially thought to be the most seriously hurt on the Blues' casualty list but, on Friday, Manly coach Geoff Toovey said the tough back-rower was likely to play against Brisbane at Suncorp.

The Sea Eagles ruled their Queensland halfback Daly Cherry-Evans out of Sunday's match with a knee injury and are hopeful he can be fit to take on the Bulldogs at Brookvale Oval next Friday.

In the case of Watmough, both player and coach interestingly noted that he had been almost done a favour by sustaining the arm injury in Origin I. Watmough had played with partially torn bicep for more than a month and Toovey believes the full tear suffered in Brisbane will be easier to deal with.

"It's been partially torn for a month now, or a little longer, and – now that it's gone – it should settle down and not be as painful," Toovey said. "When it's partially torn, it's very restrictive and painful but, once it goes, there is no problem with your movement. It's just a matter of the pain."

  • Big effort Morris, if there had been more efforts like this over the last eight years we wouldn't be thinking twice about it. In days gone by if you could go on you did go one and history is full of players putting all before defeat. Over the last eight years there have been very few NSW players willing or even interested in doing this. Lets see if those selected to take the place of the wounded for game two are just as willing to put their bodies on the line, if they are NSW wins, if not its nine in a row.

    • Bring in Dugan to fullback, move Hayne to right centre and bring in Mansour to replace Bmoz. Please please do not bring in the Newcastle wingers, they have been tried and failed enough times.

    • What a war of attrition, on both sides.

Josh's effort to run after GI and tackle him was incredible, such a shame he's out for so long. Brett is also unlucky, as is Cronk.

Gallen's injury is a real concern, as he's had some neck trouble for a while, and I hope he pulls through even if it's not in time for game 2. Necks are not an area to take lightly, and Reynolds was very lucky (as was Tate) not to miss a few weeks.
