Cleary looking forward to a post-Lewis release

IF you asked Penrith coach Ivan Cleary at the start of this year whether he would be sitting where he was yesterday, at Campbelltown Stadium, discussing the decision by his star player Luke Lewis to quit the Panthers, he would have thought you were crazy.

''It's just the way things have gone down,'' Cleary said yesterday. ''He's not the first player in his position to leave the club and he won't be the last. He has made his mind up and that's what he wants. That's what's happened, we have to move on and look to the future and … that starts [tonight].''

Addressing the release of Lewis for the first time, Cleary sounded rather matter-of-fact on the subject. The coach, whose mandate has been to effectively rebuild the club from the ground up, has shown he needs to be ruthless and he has continued to show that trait after the decision by Lewis over the weekend.

Cleary has dropped players to reserve grade and stripped Lewis of the captaincy through the Origin period. So while he expressed his disappointment at the loss of Lewis, he also showed he was prepared to quickly move on; no doubt he expects his players to do similarly.

''I think anybody involved in the club would naturally be disappointed,'' Cleary said. ''[But] we have moved on and I have to say Luke himself has looked really refreshed this week and he's probably glad he has sorted it out and can get on with doing what he does best - playing footy.''

Asked if he tried to talk the NSW and Australian representative around, Cleary said: ''We have spoken over the last couple of months about where he's at and what he wants to do. I had no inclination this was going to happen but at this point he is adamant this is what he wants to do. In his position, for a guy who has done as much for our club as he has, we have to respect his wishes.''

Cleary's keenness to move on was reflected, too, in the discussion over where Lewis will play next season. As far as Cleary is concerned, Lewis's future is ''resolved''.

''Things have obviously taken their course,'' Cleary said. ''This is what he wants to do, we have moved on and I would like to move on today if possible. We can talk about the game; that's what we're here for.''

The fact one of Lewis's suitors was sitting next to him when he made those comments was another intriguing aspect. Tigers coach Tim Sheens, whose team plays the Panthers at Campbelltown tonight, made no secret of his desire to see Lewis in his side.

Sheens has coached Lewis in Australian squads, while Tigers captain Robbie Farah has played with the back-rower at that level, as well as in the State of Origin series for NSW.

Farah admitted yesterday he had spoken with Lewis about his future.

''Yeah, not just about the contract stuff, but I've obviously got to know Luke pretty well through the last few Aussie tours and Origin,'' Farah said. ''I consider him a really good friend.

''Obviously, I stay in contact with him, just to make sure he's all right … the thing I mentioned when I spoke to him, I just said 'do what's best for yourself'. That's the most important thing. He's got to look after himself, and go to a place he's happy, and he can achieve his goals heading into the back-end of his career. Hopefully he sees our club as that place. If not, I want him to do what's best for him.''

Cleary, who joined the Panthers this season after guiding the Warriors to the grand final last year, conceded that the challenge of turning around the club had been bigger than he expected.

''Part of the attraction for me was the challenge and I have certainly got that,'' he said. ''I am enjoying the challenge and I am very, very confident about the future of the club.''

While the Panthers are attempting to move on from the loss of Lewis, they at least have secured another player for their roster for next season. The club announced that Newcastle centre Wes Naiqama had agreed to join the club on a two-year deal from 2013.
