South Sydney power past Manly

The Rabbitohs left the Sea Eagles licking their wounds on Friday night as they steamrolled their table-topping rivals at the SCG.

Manly coach Geoff Toovey has criticised the referees for allowing South Sydney to "wrestle the crap" out of his team on Friday night.

South Sydney's big men dominated the Manly pack at the Sydney Cricket Ground, making easy inroads through the middle of the field in the 23-4 win.

However Toovey insists he was more concerned with the Rabbitohs' wrestle than his side's efforts in the centre of the paddock.

"They were just better than us tonight," he said.

"We were a bit down and I thought they just wrestled the crap out of us that first half and slowed the game right down which suited them obviously. Losing Steve Matai early didn't really help us either.

"I thought they played well. They were allowed to play the game plan they had, slowing us down. They were good and we didn't execute. I think we had 60 something per cent, which is just not good enough against a quality side like Souths. They wore us down in the end. We had an opportunity to get close in the second half but we didn't take that opportunity and they just ran away it."

Matai suffered a shoulder injury in the fifth minute of the match, leaving the field and failing to return.

There's a suggestion South Sydney prop George Burgess performed a chicken wing tackle on the Manly centre, however the match officials didn't pick it up.

While Toovey didn't comment on the tackle, he took aim at the touch judges for failing to notice the incident.

"I'll have to look at it and see what happens," Toovey said of the tackle.

"I don't know what the role of the touch judge is any more - they don't worry about the ten, they don't worry about the offsides on kicks, I don't know."

    • If anything Toovey should have gone in harder on the refs failure to police foul play, it's pretty damn obvious Maguire coaches his players to target key opposition player injuries with dodgy wrestling moves..the Matai chicken wing in this game, Lima's crocodile on Watmough's dodgy knee last year, multiple S Burgess incidents ....not to mention the reputation for these kind of tactics Madge built for himself when coaching at Wigan.

      • Geoff toovey, think back to 2013 @ Gosford when a manly player was put on report twice for spear tackles on G I. As well as at least 1 other player doing the same. That would have to be one of the ugliest games I have seen

        • Matai was put on report in April last year when he took off George Burgess' head with a high tackle when they lost 20-12 to Souths at Brookvale. Toovey and the Manly players all laughed about it in the papers the next week saying it was "####ing awesome...".

          • Toovey is a flog. Shut out of the game for 74 minutes and it's the ref's fault. Get a new line Toovey 'cos this one is getting boring.

            • The chicken wing was so blatant those blokes both should be given a month. It was so prolonged it could be nothing other than deliberate and malicious.

I don't know about the relevance of the touch judges, but the video ref must have been in the beer queue during the aftermath of the Mattai tackle.

              • As a Souths member who was at the ground, I have to admit that it didn't look too good when I watched it on the TV when I was back home. Maybe that was a bit of a square up for Matai's blindside hit on GB last year, but even so I'd hate to think he was intentionally trying to injure Matai, who knows.

Manly played awfully, Souths played strongly. Could be very different next time they meet. Souths also blew a few opportunities last night, and it could easily have been 32-4.

            • i don't like Manly I come from the Cronulla area but what Toovey said about sideline referees is true they can call a 40/20 from 20 metres away and come within cm of the line ( mostly wrong) but can't see forward passes, knock on or off side right in front of them, so how are they going to see a thing like a chicken wing if is not in a bucket replace the lineman with 4by2 with flags and along piece of string someone in the crowd could pull it and the video ref could check it and Keary the South's 5/8 if I was your Dad you would get a kick up the backside for the dive (play the other fooootball to do that) and pat on the head for the rest of your game so learn now before a forward teaches you.
